Mozambique Travel Info

 

1. Travel documentation

Passports: must be vaild (not expiring within 6 months for the date of travel), and should have at least 2 clean pages. Please note that passports are required for adults and children. There is a immigration fee of R17-00 per person payable at the border. Please ensure that you have the exact amount as they often do not have any change at the border.

Visas: are only required for entry into Mozambique by non-South African passport holders. Visas can be aranged at the border @ R190.

 

2. Vehicles

Only 4 X 4 vehicles can enter Mozambique due to the poor state of roads. If you do not have such a vehicle a border pick-up can be arranged.

If you are intending to travel with a 4 X 4 then the following information will be helpful.

 

When traveling with a 2 X 4 there are lock up facilities at the border South Africa & Mozambique side at a nominal cost of R30 per day.

 

3. Cell phones

Only cell phones from M-Cell, Moc Vodacom or phones with roaming will receive signal

 

4. Money.

Rands are accepted in Ponta do Ouro. You don't need to exchange your money into Meticas (Mozambiquan currency). At present the exchange rate is R1 for 4 mts. There are a VISA autobank in Ponta do Ouro, but please make sure you take enough cash with you, as only some resturants have card facilities, and they don't always work.

 

Southern Mozambique is considered a low risk malaria area – please consult your GP for advice on precautionary medication.

 

Take small dominations of cash with!!
